"Surrealism is pure psychic automatism. It is the dictation of thought in the absence of all control exerted by reason. It reflects the purposeless play of thought." (From the First Surrealist Manifesto – André Breton, 1924). And André Breton also said: "The simplest surrealist act is to run into the street with a gun and shoot into the crowd."
In this way, Breton predicted Donald Trump’s declaration that he could stand on Fifth Avenue in New York, shoot someone, and still not lose his voters. Indeed, surrealism in all its meanings is found everywhere and in every sense in the world surrounding our lives today. Leda Lapidus, much like the surrealists of the 20th century, prefers the world of dreams and the subconscious over the reality that envelops our lives.
Lada Lapidus is a self-taught artist who creates surrealistic worlds. The objects in her works appear real and highly realistic, but their placement on the canvas, their relationship to the background, the perspective, and their connection to other objects on the canvas are unrealistic.
“Since childhood, I’ve felt that ordinary reality wasn’t enough for me. I’ve always sought ways to express other, hidden, dreamlike worlds—to connect between parallel worlds and the one we live in. When I encountered the works of surrealist artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, who showed me that anything is possible, I realized I had found my artistic place.” According to her, the creative process takes several months and is driven by a deep passion and inner urge to create. It begins with dreams, a vague idea, an emotion, or an image that pops into her mind.
“Then I think of a story to accompany the idea and how to realize it visually. I make freehand sketches and search for form by building layers of colour and texture until the piece comes to life and an entire world is built through colour, shapes, and symbols. I always strive to cross the boundaries of logic and create powerful imagery with deep symbolic language, drawn from emotional boldness.”
Lapidus seeks to fulfill the surrealist ideal, which is about merging irrationality with the concept of pure, unrestricted thought—creating logic similar to thoughts found in dreams, madness, or the subconscious, and reflecting the inner thoughts of the individual through free association.
She recreates the world in a new order, without logic. Lapidus crafts such surreal worlds in her artworks. Sometimes, in her creative process, she engages in a fruitful dialogue with AI. She occasionally uses artificial intelligence to position the characters she creates in ways and poses that humans cannot achieve, to form other dimensions, visual distortions, and to break perspectives and compositions. During her dialogue with AI, Lapidus takes the bizarre imagery that emerges and continues working on it with oils and brushes on canvas.
Lapidus uses AI wisely. She knows exactly what she’s looking for, and with the help of AI, she finds endless raw materials, modifies and upgrades them to reach impossible places—launching the imagery she creates into obscure, non-human, unrealistic realms.
“My hallucinations, fantasies, ideas, and wild imagination are born within me, and the AI helps me bring them to life.” Lada Lapidus creates breathtaking surrealistic artworks and parallel worlds. She is the creator, the planner, the director—shaping a unique and mesmerizing order within her own world. A surreal world that is, in every sense, beyond reality.
