Dr. Marek Kuten talks about Jewish history in Poland and the activities of Jewish Community standing in front of the Polin Museum, the site of former Warsaw Ghetto for SNN, Space Network News.

Shalom! from Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Shalom! for everyone.

I am standing in a place dedicated to the memory of Jewish history in Poland. The POLIN Museum. It’s location is on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto.  The Hebrew word Polin means "Poland" or "rest here" and relates to a legend about the arrival of the first Jews to Poland.

POLIN Museum the history of Jews. It is a modern cultural institution – a narrative museum which presents a 1000-year history of Polish Jews. It is also a place for meetings and conversations for all of those eager to learn more about the past and present Jewish culture, to confront the stereotypes, and to face the perils of today’s world such as xenophobia and nationalistic prejudices. By promoting openness, tolerance, and truth, POLIN Museum contributes to the mutual understanding and respect amongst Poles and Jews.

The history of the Jews in Poland dates back over 1,000 years.  For centuries, Poland was home to the largest and most significant Jewish community in the world.

This ended with the Partitions of Poland which began in 1772, with the discrimination and persecution of Jews in the Russian Empire. During The Holocaust of II World War was a nearly complete genocidal (dżenosajdel) of the Polish Jewish community by Nazi Germany. In the Holocaust (Shoah) Nazi Germany with the collaborants murdered in the ghettos and dead German camps some 6 million European Jews. The 3 million Polish Jews were murdered - 90% of Polish Jews.

In the post-war, many Jewish – the holocaust survivors - left the Polish People’s Republic. Most of the Jews left in late 1968 as the result of "anti-Zionist" campaign.

After the Communist regime in 1989, the situation of Polish Jews became normalized. Many historical issues were reviewed, especially related to II World War and the 1944–1989 period. Jewish religious life has been revived. Currently and from many years, the chief Rabbi of Poland is MICHAEL SCHUDRICH, my big authority. He was born in New York City. His grandparents emigrated to the United States from Poland, before II World War.

We have The March of the Living in Poland. It is an event held each year to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. It takes place from Auschwitz, Germany’s death camp to Birkenau and is attended by many people from Israel, Poland and other countries.

The Auschwitz concentration Germany dead camp (Konzentrationslager Auschwitz) was a complex of more than 40 Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built and operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. It consisted of Auschwitz I, the main camp (Stammlager) and administrative headquarters in Oświęcim; Auschwitz II–Birkenau, a combined concentration and extermination camp three kilometers away in Brzezinka; Auschwitz III–Monowitz, a labor camp seven kilometers from Auschwitz I set up to staff an IG Farben synthetic-rubber factory; and dozens of other subcamps.

My father, who is 78 years old takes part in The March of the Living each year. He attended The March of Living this year as well, the 2nd of May.

Finally, I want to announce a community of Poles with Jews. I want to announce that we are one nation.

Poland, Polin “rest here” is for all of us. SHALOM!
